Oh WOW!!! I'm just floored at how well this printed. Every just looks exactly as I intended and the overall quality has exceeded my expectations. I know MagCloud is good, but I wasn't really expecting it to be THIS good.

Highly recommend MagCloud. These folks definitely have this down to a fine art. :-)

In Jan/Feb of 2011, I traveled in Mexico for a month. Each place I went I made a short stop-motion video clip with an iPhone 4. This video virtually compresses the whole month-long journey down to about 5 minutes.

For your pleasure... shot & edited 100% on iPhone 4.

I really didn't set out to make this full 5 minute trip through Mexico from the beginning, but I was fascinated with using the iPhone 4 and the StopMotion Recorder app to make little vignettes that somehow bridge the gap between still image photography and motion image capture. Somehow I think this method conveys a scene in a much better way than either a still or motion image can in that the photographer can more tightly direct what they want to viewer to see in a given place.

The first few attempts to use this method to bring the viewer a bit deeper into the travel experience was during a trip to Washington D.C. to see one of my images displayed in the Smithsonian Castle, I made a few time-lapse sequences for the travel blog I kept. One of the sequences was meant to convey what it feels like to ride the people mover between art galleries on the mall without having to take 10mins of video doing it: HERE

I really liked the way this compressed time and gives the viewer an interesting experience and still conveys the gist of the actual experience. Cut to a couple months later while backpacking in Mexico for a month, I continued with these sequences all along the way with further experimentation. When I got home there were so many I thought came out well that I decided to just edit a few of my favorites together to wrap up the blog I'd kept of the journey: HERE

The idea of this piece being done completely on the iPhone 4 really appealed to me so I used the app Splice to put them together and drop in some title frames and basic transitions. As I watched a few play back in sequence, it occurred to me that if I just string all of the sequences together in order, the viewer would essentially be able to view the gist of my entires month's worth of traveling in Mexico in just 5 mins. And I think it came out rather well if I do say so myself. :-)

This is something I'm definitely planning on continuing on my next travels, but I do think some audio would be nice. I'm not sure how I'm going to mix appropriate audio for a time-lapse sequence, but I think I'll likely try to create mixed soundscapes of each scene captured like I did in this recent trip to New Orleans where I made this soundscape in the French Quarter using the iphone 4 for audio recording, and then edited into multiple layers with one track of "Play Misty for Me" running underneath to hold it all together: HERE

This sort of approach of taking a virtual traveler along with you and give them the emotional highlights in condensed digital expressions via soundscapes and time-lapse might just be an more immersive experience than video and sound are capable of delivering. We shall see. Stay tuned!

"Tug" :: Veracruz, Mexico (c) 2011 Skip Hunt

Coatepec + Xico + Veracruz

Arriving in Coatepec just felt right. I don't know why. It was raining, a bit chilly and I spent over two hours trudging around in a misty rain looking for a cheap room. Time after time I was sent on a wild goose chase with clear directions of "go two streets, then turn left, then go three more streets, then just around from the church go down the side road." It's always possible that I simply wasn't understanding the Spanish, but dang it... I had them repeat a couple times to make sure I had it right. Then I'd get there and there'd be nothing resembling what I'd told about. That's the way the tortilla rips in Mexico though. Often someone instead of just saying they don't know, will send you on your way with fantasy directions. And, then sometimes you just get it wrong.

Peace Out

"Peace Out" :: Xico, Mexico (c) 2011 Skip Hunt

Java Jitters

New Travelog Phone Blog from Coatepec, Mexico here:

Sueno de Gustavo :: Coatepec, Mexico (c) 2011 Skip Hunt

¿Por qué

Woke up early one morning and wondered in the darkness why I'm doing any of this. Why make images at all? Why write any of this down? Why care?

At first, it was easy to just claim it's just some artistic compulsion, or something mysterious I'd never know. But this time I decided to dig deeper. Why does it matter if I make images that give me pleasure or hopefully others a bit of pleasure as well?

What does it mean if someone other than myself approves of something I create? If they are giving me money that translates in a bit more freedom to move about, then that's one reason of course. But, I feel there's some other reason I'm doing this. Is it to document the experience to share with someone else? If so, who am I to think my experience is of any more interest than the reader's own experience?

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart :: Coatepec, Mexico (c) 2011 Skip Hunt

This devotion is predominantly used in the Catholic Church and among some high-church Anglicans. The devotion especially emphasizes the unmitigated love, compassion, and long-suffering of the heart of Christ towards humanity. The origin of this devotion in its modern form is derived from a French Roman Catholic nun, Marguerite Marie Alacoque, who said she learned the devotion from Jesus during a mystical experience. Predecessors to the modern devotion arose unmistakably in the Middle Ages in various facets of Catholic mysticism.

Five days into Mexico City and I'm amazed at how quick my perspective has changed. I can still vaguely remember how I felt coming into the city on the bus. So excited and ready for the sensual cornucopia.

Now, it's as if loneliness is taking over and the city is merely a background noise that won't go away. Last night there was cackling woman's laughter all night in the room next to mine. I think I could hear two men grunting as if they were trying to speak but were too drunk. Eventually the laughter gave way to loud ooing and groaning as you might expect. I figured they'd at least be finished soon so that I could sleep. Such was not the case. After a brief quiet, the cackling came back along with the voice of a young child in the room with them.

Cool & the Gang

"Cool & the Gang" :: Street market in Mexico City (c) 2011 Skip Hunt

Mexico City Mega Mix ;-)

This mix is a mess for sure, but I think it also conveys the sensual overload that overcomes you before you learn to filter some of the sound texture out.

       Mariachi Plaza DF.ogg by skiphunt

Huiricuta

Heading out into the desert felt a bit different this time. It may have been the familiarity having done so many times before, and by bus many years ago.

It may have had more to do with having the brand new perspective of more age and experience. Whatever it was, it had a distinctly fresh feel to it.
